LONDON ROMAN LAW GROUP:

Dissimulation in Iniuria

by
Professor Paul Mitchell
UCL

on Friday 18th November, from 5-7pm

Venue:
Keeton Room
UCL Law Faculty
Bentham House, Endsleigh Gardens
London WC1H 0EG

About this talk:
The essence of the Roman delict of iniuria (disrespect) was the deliberate insult of another person. But it was also necessary for the claimant immediately to show that he was offended. A claimant who initially brushed aside the insult, but who later felt aggrieved by it would, we are told, lose his claim on the ground of 'dissimulatio'. This paper explores the possible reasons behind this requirement, and elucidates the meaning of 'dissimulatio'. It also highlights ways in which English law has adopted rules with similar effects.

About the speaker:
Paul Mitchell is Professor of Law at UCL. He researches on and teaches the law of obligations and legal history.
